Insight · Private health insurance

Half as many people are paying in as are claiming.

That single ratio explains most of what is happening to private hospitals. It is also the kind of number we build for boards before they commit capital — with the workings attached.

Working-age policyholders per retiring-age policyholder

Australia · 2000 – 2030 projected

Falling ratio of working-age to retiring-age private health insurance policyholders The ratio falls from 4.3 in 2000, to 1.9 in 2026, to a projected 1.6 in 2030. 4.3 1.9 1.6 2000 2026 2030 proj.
Community rating only works while enough contributing-age members carry the claiming-age ones. That balance has more than halved in a generation.

What we do

A defensible number, and the workings behind it.

We advise mid-market healthcare, aged care and disability organisations — typically $5 million to $150 million of revenue — on the decisions that are too consequential to take on judgement alone.

Much of our work is with technology-enabled service providers, where clinical models, funding systems, data and corporate finance all meet at once. That intersection is where value is usually created or quietly destroyed, and it is where thirteen years of sector-specific work earns its keep.

Our advice is quantitatively anchored wherever that is pragmatic. We build the model from drivers up, table every assumption with the basis for it, run the scenarios that matter, and stress-test the result until it either holds or does not. Margin compression falls out of the model as an output — it is never assumed into it.
